Buying a Best Buy gift card with crypto

Electronics is one of the more natural crypto conversions — large, planned, infrequent purchases. It is also the retail category most heavily targeted by gift card fraud, which makes this the page where that warning belongs in full.

Our featured on-ramp is CEX.IO CORP — a FinCEN-registered money services business holding an Illinois money transmitter licence (MT.0000359), NMLS ID 1804170. See how we rank exchanges.

Why electronics suits a crypto conversion

The administrative cost of converting crypto into spending is roughly fixed per transaction — one disposal to record, one cost basis calculation, and from 2027 one Illinois digital asset tax event. That makes large, infrequent purchases far more efficient than small, frequent ones.

Electronics fits that shape better than almost any other retail category. A laptop, a television, a washing machine, a camera — these are planned purchases in the hundreds or low thousands, made a few times a year at most. Converting once for a specific item is exactly the right use of this mechanism.

Best Buy operates a substantial Illinois store network with dense coverage across the Chicago collar counties and locations in every mid-sized market. Cards work in store, online, and for Geek Squad services.

Buying and redeeming

  1. Choose a denomination. US Best Buy cards are commonly offered from around $25 to $500. Multiple cards stack for larger purchases.
  2. Select your cryptocurrency. Bitcoin, Lightning, ether, USDC, USDT, litecoin, dogecoin and solana are widely supported.
  3. Pay the invoice from your wallet.
  4. Receive the code, usually within seconds.
  5. Use it at the register or by entering the number and PIN at online checkout.

Best Buy cards do not expire and carry no fees. Illinois law at 815 ILCS 505/2SS separately prohibits any gift certificate sold in the state from expiring earlier than five years from issuance or carrying a post-purchase fee.

Buy the card after you have chosen the item

Convert for a specific purchase rather than converting speculatively and looking for something to spend it on. Gift card credit is illiquid — it cannot become dollars again — and a balance sitting unused is a worse position than simply having held the crypto.

Do not buy a hardware wallet from a retailer

This belongs on this page more than any other, because Best Buy is exactly where someone might think to look.

Buy hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer. Never from a general retailer, never from a marketplace listing, never second-hand, never from a seller on an auction site regardless of feedback.

The reason is a specific and well-documented attack. A tampered device can be supplied with a pre-generated recovery phrase — the packaging looks correct, the device works normally, and the attacker who prepared it can drain the wallet at any point afterwards. There is no way to detect this from the outside, and the loss is total and irreversible.

The rule, stated plainly

Order from the manufacturer's own website. Check the tamper-evident packaging. Generate your own recovery phrase on first use — if a device arrives with a phrase already written down for you, it is compromised and should never be used.

The gift card fraud pattern — read this even if you skip the rest

Electronics retailers are among the most common destinations in gift card fraud, and the pattern is worth spelling out because it is the single most preventable loss in this whole category.

The script. Someone calls claiming to be from the IRS, a utility, a court, a police department, a government agency, your employer's finance team, or a supplier. There is an urgent debt, a fine, a payroll issue, an invoice. You are asked to buy gift cards — often electronics or general retail — and read the codes over the phone.

Why it works. Urgency, authority, and the fact that gift card codes are irreversible bearer instruments. Once a code is read out, the money is gone and cannot be recovered by anyone.

The rule that stops all of it: no government agency, court, tax authority, utility, bank or legitimate employer ever accepts payment in retail gift cards. Not the IRS, not the Illinois Department of Revenue, not ComEd, not a sheriff's office, not a hospital. The request itself is the fraud.

Illinois residents reported $20,077,277 in crypto kiosk fraud losses alone to the FBI in 2025 across 510 complaints. Gift card fraud is tracked separately and runs larger nationally. Our Illinois scam guide covers the full catalogue, and our refund guide covers what to do if it has already happened.

What the card will not cover

  • Cash back or redemption for cash. Not available, and returns paid by gift card are typically refunded to a gift card.
  • Buying other gift cards. Blocked.
  • Some carrier device activations and instalment plans billed by the mobile carrier rather than the retailer.
  • Third-party marketplace sellers on the retailer's website, where the seller handles payment separately.

If you need broader coverage — a specialist supplier, an independent repair shop, a builder's merchant — a general-purpose prepaid card reaches further, at higher cost and outside Illinois's single-merchant gift card protections. Our vouchers guide covers that category.

Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem

Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.

Tax treatment

Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.

There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

Our filing guide covers the record-keeping.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Can I buy a laptop with bitcoin in Illinois?

Indirectly, and easily. Convert crypto into a Best Buy gift card on a marketplace such as Bitrefill, Coinsbee or CoinGate — delivery is usually within seconds — then use it in store or at online checkout. Best Buy has a substantial Illinois store network with dense coverage across the collar counties. Electronics is one of the better categories for this because purchases are large and infrequent.

Should I buy a hardware wallet from a retail store?

No. Buy hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer’s own website — never from a general retailer, a marketplace listing, an auction site or second-hand. A tampered device supplied with a pre-generated recovery phrase looks and behaves normally, and the attacker who prepared it can drain the wallet at any time. The compromise is undetectable from the outside and the loss is total.

Someone asked me to pay a bill with Best Buy gift cards. Is that legitimate?

No, without exception. No government agency, court, tax authority, utility, bank or legitimate employer ever accepts payment in retail gift cards. Not the IRS, not the Illinois Department of Revenue, not ComEd, not a sheriff’s office. The request itself is the fraud. Gift card codes are irreversible bearer instruments — once read out, the money cannot be recovered by anyone.

Can I get cash back from a Best Buy gift card?

No. Best Buy gift card balances are not redeemable for cash, and a return on an item paid for with a gift card is typically refunded to a gift card rather than to cash or a bank card. If you want dollars rather than store credit, sell crypto on an exchange and withdraw by ACH — it costs far less than any gift card conversion.
