Region locking comes first
Before anything else: Steam wallet codes are region-specific. A code issued for one country will not redeem on an account registered in another, and the error message you get is not always obvious about why.
If you are in Illinois with a US Steam account, buy the United States version of the card. Marketplaces list regional variants side by side and it is easy to select the wrong one, particularly when a different region shows a lower price — which is precisely why it does.
There is no fix afterwards
A regional mismatch is not something support can generally resolve, and gift card marketplaces will not refund a delivered code. Check the region on the product page before paying, not after.

Buying and redeeming
- Confirm the region matches your Steam account. This is step one for a reason.
- Choose a denomination. US Steam cards are commonly offered from around $20 to $100.

Steam credit is not quite like other gift card balances, and three differences matter.
It becomes wallet funds, not a card. Once redeemed, the balance sits in your Steam Wallet and applies automatically to purchases. Balances stack without limit up to Steam's own wallet ceiling.
Refunds return to the wallet. Steam's refund policy — broadly, within a set window and under a playtime threshold — returns funds to the Steam Wallet by default when the original purchase used wallet credit. It covers the whole platform. Games, downloadable content, in-game purchases on supported titles, soundtracks, software and hardware sold through Steam. It does not convert to cash and cannot be transferred between accounts.

A genuine Illinois angle, and one most people do not know.

- Do not buy discounted wallet codes from third parties. Codes offered below face value on forums, marketplaces and trading communities are frequently bought with stolen cards. When the chargeback lands, the code is revoked and your account may be actioned.
That last point applies with particular force here. The whole reason to buy a wallet code from an established crypto marketplace is that the code has a clean provenance. A "cheap" code from a stranger does not.
Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem
Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.
Tax treatment
Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.
There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

Buying for someone else
A substantial share of Steam gift card purchases are gifts rather than self-purchases, and a few practical points follow from that.
The region must match the recipient's account, not yours. This is the most common failure. A US code bought in Illinois will not redeem on an account registered in another country, and a code purchased for a cheaper region will not redeem here. Confirm where their account is registered before buying.
Wallet codes are not the same as gifting a specific game. Steam's own gifting flow sends a particular title directly to a friend's account. A wallet code adds spendable credit, which is more flexible and less personal. Decide which you actually mean.
Delivery is a code in an email, which is a bearer instrument. Anyone who sees it can redeem it. Send it in a way the recipient will actually open promptly, and do not post it in a group chat.
Tax still applies to you. Buying a gift card with crypto is a disposal regardless of who ends up using it. The gift is of the card; the disposal of the crypto is yours, and it produces a capital gain or loss against your cost basis.
