Buying gift cards with crypto in Illinois

You do not have to sell crypto to spend it. Gift card marketplaces convert digital assets into retail credit in under a minute, often with a rebate paid back in bitcoin — and Illinois has some of the stronger gift card consumer protections in the country behind them.

Our featured on-ramp is CEX.IO CORP — a FinCEN-registered money services business holding an Illinois money transmitter licence (MT.0000359), NMLS ID 1804170. See how we rank exchanges.

Why convert crypto into gift cards at all

Very few Illinois merchants accept digital assets directly. What exists instead is a conversion layer, and it is better than most people realise.

The alternative — selling on an exchange, waiting one to three business days for an ACH withdrawal, then spending dollars — is cheaper in pure cost terms and produces better records. The gift card route wins on three things:

  • Speed. Under a minute, end to end, versus a settlement window.
  • Simplicity. No bank involvement, no withdrawal, no compliance review on a first large transfer.
  • Rebates. Several providers pay a percentage back in bitcoin, which can offset or exceed the conversion spread on the right brand.

The honest summary: if you want dollars, sell on an exchange. If you were going to shop at that retailer anyway, the card is a perfectly reasonable conversion — and on a brand with a good rebate it can genuinely come out ahead.

Every brand we cover

Each guide below covers what the card actually buys, the Illinois angle, the terms that catch people out and the tax position.

Denominations are those commonly offered by major marketplaces and vary by provider. Availability changes — check the live product page.

The marketplaces

The main crypto gift card marketplaces

FoldUS-focused1%–20% back in sats depending on merchantMaximising rebates on regular spending

Rebate rates are promotional, change frequently and vary by brand. Check the live rate on the product page before you buy — the figure quoted in any article, including this one, is a snapshot.

A practical note on choosing between them: for a common US brand, all five work. The differentiators are the live rebate rate on the day, which cryptocurrencies you actually hold, and whether the provider requires an account. Bitrefill's catalogue is the broadest and its Lightning delivery the fastest; Coinsbee's 200-plus coin support matters if you hold something unusual.

How a purchase works

The mechanics are the same across every major marketplace and take under a minute once you have crypto.

  1. Choose the brand and denomination on the marketplace.
  2. Select the cryptocurrency you want to pay with. Bitcoin over the Lightning Network settles almost instantly and with negligible network fees; on-chain bitcoin, ether, USDC, USDT, litecoin, dogecoin and solana are widely supported.
  3. Pay the invoice from your wallet, usually by scanning a QR code.
  4. Receive the code by email or in the marketplace's interface, typically within seconds.
  5. Redeem it in the retailer's app, website or at the till.

Some providers require no account at all; others require registration but not full identity verification for ordinary amounts. Check the specific provider's current requirements, which vary by jurisdiction and by transaction size.

Use Lightning for small amounts

On-chain bitcoin network fees can be a meaningful fraction of a $5 or $10 gift card. Paid over the Lightning Network they are effectively nothing, and settlement is near-instant. If your wallet supports Lightning, small purchases are exactly where it earns its keep.

Rebates, honestly

Several providers pay a percentage back in bitcoin on gift card purchases. The headline numbers are real and the details matter.

From our review desk

The pattern we see consistently: everyday-spending categories — grocery, fuel, restaurants — carry better rebates than marketplaces, because merchant margins in those categories are wider. Amazon is frequently at or near the bottom of the range for exactly that reason. If the rebate is what you are after, the brand matters far more than the provider. And keep it in proportion: 3% back on a $200 grocery card is $6, which is smaller than the difference between buying your crypto on an exchange and buying it at an Illinois kiosk, where the statutory ceiling is 18%.

Illinois consumer protection

Illinois has its own gift card statute, and it is more protective than most states. Under the Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act at 815 ILCS 505/2SS, a gift certificate sold in Illinois on or after 1 January 2008 may not carry an expiration date earlier than five years from issuance, and may not carry a post-purchase fee — no dormancy charges, no monthly deductions. Non-compliance can attract civil penalties of up to $50,000 per infraction.

Two limitations are worth knowing. The Illinois protection applies to single-merchant store cards; cards usable with multiple sellers — general-purpose prepaid Visa or Mastercard products — fall outside the state definition, though the federal CARD Act still imposes a five-year minimum on those. And prepaid telecommunications and technology cards are excluded from the Illinois definition entirely.

Two practical consequences for anyone buying gift cards with crypto in Illinois:

  • A single-merchant card sold in Illinois cannot quietly erode. No dormancy fees, no monthly deductions, and at least five years of validity from issuance.
  • General-purpose prepaid cards are a different product. A prepaid Visa or Mastercard usable at multiple merchants falls outside the Illinois definition and relies on the federal CARD Act instead — which sets a five-year minimum but permits certain fees the Illinois statute would prohibit. Our vouchers guide covers that category properly.

Tax treatment

Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.

There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

Our filing guide covers the record-keeping.

Fewer, larger conversions

This is the single most useful operational takeaway on the page. One $200 card is one taxable disposal. Forty $5 purchases are forty separate cost basis calculations for the same total spend and a trivial difference in tax owed. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act's 0.2% is also levied per broker transaction regardless of size, which pushes in the same direction.

What to avoid

Gift cards are the most heavily abused payment instrument in US consumer fraud, and the patterns are consistent enough to list.

  1. Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, court, tax authority, utility, bank, hospital or legitimate employer accepts payment in retail gift cards. The request is the fraud, without exception.
  2. Never read a code over the phone or send a photograph of one. The code is the money. Once spent, it cannot be recovered by anyone.
  3. Do not buy discounted codes from strangers. Codes offered below face value on forums and trading communities are frequently bought with stolen cards; when the chargeback lands, the code is revoked.
  4. Check the region before paying. Steam and Google Play codes in particular are region-locked, and a cheaper foreign version is cheaper precisely because it will not redeem on your account.
  5. Redeem promptly. An unredeemed code sitting in an email inbox is a bearer instrument. Load it into the retailer's account the day you buy it.

Illinois residents reported $20,077,277 in cryptocurrency kiosk fraud losses alone to the FBI in 2025, across 510 complaints. Gift card fraud is tracked separately and runs larger nationally. Our Illinois scam guide covers the full catalogue, and our refund guide covers what to do if it has already happened.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Can I buy gift cards with crypto in Illinois?

Yes, and nothing in Illinois law restricts it. Marketplaces such as Bitrefill, Coinsbee, CoinGate, Fold and The Bitcoin Company sell US brand gift cards for bitcoin, Lightning, ether, USDC, USDT and dozens of other assets, with delivery usually within seconds. Bitrefill alone lists over 5,000 products across more than 170 countries.

What is the best site to buy gift cards with bitcoin?

It depends what you are optimising for. Bitrefill has the broadest catalogue and the fastest Lightning delivery. Coinsbee supports over 200 cryptocurrencies, which matters if you hold something outside the majors. CoinGate combines a marketplace with merchant payment tools. Fold and The Bitcoin Company compete on rebates — 1%–20% and up to 25% respectively on select brands. Check the live rate on the product page; those figures are promotional and change.

Do gift cards bought with crypto expire in Illinois?

Illinois law at 815 ILCS 505/2SS prohibits any gift certificate sold in the state from carrying an expiration date earlier than five years from issuance, or any post-purchase fee, with civil penalties of up to $50,000 per infraction. That applies to single-merchant store cards. Multi-merchant products such as general-purpose prepaid Visa cards fall outside the Illinois definition and rely on the federal CARD Act’s five-year minimum instead.

Do I owe tax when I buy a gift card with crypto?

Yes, on the crypto side. Spending crypto is a disposal — the IRS treats digital assets as property, so a $100 gift card purchase is a $100 sale producing a capital gain or loss against your cost basis. Illinois taxes the gain through your ordinary state return. There is no de minimis exemption for small personal spending, which is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions.

Is buying gift cards with crypto cheaper than selling on an exchange?

Usually not in pure cost terms. Selling on a licensed exchange and withdrawing by ACH costs well under 1%; a gift card conversion typically carries a spread. The gift card wins on speed and simplicity, and can win overall where a meaningful rebate applies. If you want dollars, sell. If you were going to shop at that retailer anyway, the card is fine.

Do I need to verify my identity to buy a gift card with crypto?

Requirements vary by provider and by amount. Some marketplaces require no account at all for ordinary purchases; others require registration but not full identity verification below certain thresholds. This is different from buying crypto itself, where every licensed US exchange requires verification. Check the specific provider’s current requirements before assuming.
