Buying an Uber gift card with crypto

One gift card balance covers both rides and Uber Eats, which makes it unusually flexible. In Chicago it also runs into one of the highest rideshare tax regimes in the country — worth understanding before you convert.

Why an Uber card

Uber gift cards are one of the more genuinely useful conversions available, for a simple structural reason: the balance covers both rides and Uber Eats. You are not choosing between transport and food when you convert — you are topping up a single account that does both.

In Illinois that flexibility has real value. Chicago is one of Uber's largest US markets, and Uber Eats coverage extends well beyond the metropolitan area into Rockford, Peoria, Springfield, Champaign-Urbana, Bloomington-Normal, the Quad Cities and the Metro East. A card bought in Naperville works in Carbondale.

It is also a sensible conversion for people who use rideshare situationally rather than daily — a monthly top-up funded from crypto covers the airport run, the evening out, the car in the garage.

How the balance works

  1. Choose a denomination. US Uber cards are commonly offered from around $15 to $200, with the range varying by provider.
  2. Select your cryptocurrency. Bitcoin over Lightning settles fastest; on-chain bitcoin, ether, USDC, USDT and others are widely supported.
  3. Pay the invoice from your wallet.
  4. Receive the code, usually within seconds.
  5. Add it in the Uber app under Wallet → Add payment method → Gift card.

Once loaded, the balance is applied automatically to eligible trips and orders before any other payment method. Balances stack, so several cards accumulate into a single credit.

One account, two apps

The credit is attached to your Uber account, not to a specific app. Load it in the Uber app and it is available in Uber Eats as well, provided both are signed in to the same account with the same region setting. If you use separate accounts for rides and delivery, the balance will not follow you between them.

Chicago rideshare charges are worth understanding

Chicago applies its own charges to rideshare trips, and they are among the more significant in the country. A downtown-area trip picks up a per-ride ground transportation tax, with higher rates applying to solo trips into and out of the central business district during peak periods, plus surcharges on airport pickups and drop-offs at O'Hare and Midway.

For someone converting crypto into ride credit, that has two practical consequences.

Your dollar goes less far downtown than in the suburbs. The same $50 balance buys noticeably fewer trips in the Loop than it does in Naperville or Schaumburg. That is a function of the fare and charge structure, not the gift card.

Airport trips consume balance quickly. If the O'Hare run is your main use case — and for a lot of Des Plaines and north-west suburban residents it is — factor the airport surcharges in when you decide how much to convert.

Charge rates are set by ordinance and change periodically. Check the City of Chicago's current schedule rather than relying on a figure from an article, including this one.

What the card does not cover

  • Tips are sometimes excluded. Depending on how your account is configured, gift card credit may not apply to driver tips, which then fall to your backup payment method. Check before assuming a $50 balance covers a $50 total.
  • Uber One membership fees generally cannot be paid from gift card credit.
  • Some business or expense-linked accounts do not accept gift card balances at all.
  • Region locking. A US gift card works on a US-region account. If you travel and switch regions, the balance may not be available.
  • No cash out. Uber credit cannot be converted back to cash, and it is not transferable between accounts.

That last point is the one to weigh before converting a large amount. Uber credit is genuinely useful and entirely illiquid — once it is in the account it stays there until you ride or eat it. Convert what you will realistically use over a few months, not a year.

Tax treatment

Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.

There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

When something else is better

If you use several delivery services, a DoorDash card may cover more of the restaurants you actually order from — coverage differs meaningfully by neighbourhood. See our DoorDash page.

If you want flexibility across categories, a general-purpose prepaid card covers rides, food and everything else, at a higher cost and outside Illinois's single-merchant gift card protections. Our vouchers guide covers those.

If public transit is realistic for the trip, it is worth saying plainly that a CTA or Metra fare from most of the Chicago area costs a fraction of a rideshare trip, and no conversion is needed at all. Converting crypto into an expensive transport option is still choosing an expensive transport option.

If you want dollars, sell on an exchange and withdraw. Cheaper, liquid, and properly documented — see our selling guide.

Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem

Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.

Coverage across Illinois, honestly

Uber's Illinois footprint is not uniform, and it is worth knowing before you convert a meaningful amount.

Realistic availability by area

AreaRidesUber Eats
Chicago and inner suburbsExcellent, minutesComprehensive
Collar countiesGood, longer waits at the edgesGood
Larger downstate citiesWorkable, variable by hourReasonable
Small towns and ruralThin to non-existentOften absent

The rural gap is the one that matters for a gift card, because credit you cannot spend is worse than crypto you still hold. If you live outside the metropolitan areas, check the app at your own address before converting anything — and if coverage is thin, a DoorDash card generally reaches further into downstate Illinois than Uber Eats does.

One practical note for suburban riders: late-night availability in the outer collar counties can be materially worse than in the city, which affects how useful a rides balance is for the airport run that is most people's main use case.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Does an Uber gift card work for Uber Eats?

Yes. The balance attaches to your Uber account rather than to a specific app, so credit loaded in the Uber app is available in Uber Eats provided both are signed in to the same account with the same region setting. If you maintain separate accounts for rides and delivery, the balance will not transfer between them.

Can I use an Uber gift card for airport trips from O’Hare?

Yes, though airport trips consume credit faster than most. Chicago applies ground transportation charges to rideshare trips, with surcharges on pickups and drop-offs at O’Hare and Midway and higher rates on solo trips into and out of the central business district at peak times. Factor that in when deciding how much to convert. Rates are set by ordinance and change periodically.

Does Uber gift card credit cover tips?

Not always. Depending on your account configuration, gift card credit may not apply to driver tips, which then fall to your backup payment method. It is worth testing with a small trip before assuming a balance covers the full total. Uber One membership fees generally cannot be paid from gift card credit either.

Can I convert Uber credit back to cash?

No. Uber gift card credit is not redeemable for cash and is not transferable between accounts. Once it is loaded it stays there until you use it on rides or Uber Eats. That is the main argument for converting only what you will realistically use over a few months rather than a large lump sum.
