Why DoorDash in Illinois specifically
Food delivery coverage in Illinois is not uniform, and the differences matter more than the brand loyalty arguments people usually have about it.
In the Chicago metropolitan area all the major platforms compete and restaurant selection overlaps heavily. Outside it, the picture changes. DoorDash has consistently pushed further into mid-sized and smaller markets — Peoria, Decatur, DeKalb, the Quad Cities, Carbondale, Quincy, Galesburg — where competitor coverage thins or disappears.
If you live outside the collar counties and want to convert crypto into food delivery, DoorDash is usually the one that actually has the restaurants near you on it. That is the whole argument, and it is a good one.
It also covers considerably more than restaurants now, which is dealt with below and changes the value of the conversion substantially.
Loading the balance
- Choose a denomination. US DoorDash cards are commonly offered from around $15 to $200 depending on the provider.
- Select your cryptocurrency. Bitcoin over Lightning settles fastest and cheapest; on-chain bitcoin, ether, USDC, USDT and others are widely supported.
- Pay the invoice from your wallet.
- Receive the code, usually within seconds.
- Redeem it in the DoorDash app or website under Account → Gift Cards, or at checkout.
The credit becomes an account balance and is applied automatically to eligible orders. Balances stack, and DoorDash will split payment between the gift card balance and another method when the balance does not cover the total — which, as the next section explains, it frequently will not.
The checkout arithmetic nobody does in advance
A $50 DoorDash balance does not buy $50 of food. This is not a criticism of the gift card — it is how delivery pricing works — but it changes how much you should convert.
What sits on top of the menu price
| Charge | Typical effect | Can a gift card cover it? |
|---|---|---|
| In-app menu markup | Prices often above dine-in | Yes — it is part of the item price |
| Delivery fee | Varies by distance and demand | Yes |
| Service fee | A percentage of the subtotal | Yes |
| Illinois sales tax | Varies by municipality | Yes |
| Tip | Your choice, but expected | Usually yes at checkout |
| Small order fee | Applies below a subtotal threshold | Yes |
Chicago also applies its own restaurant and food-and-beverage taxes on top of state and county sales tax, which means a delivered meal in the city carries a higher total tax rate than the same meal in most of the suburbs. That is not specific to delivery, but it compounds with every other line.
A realistic rule of thumb
Budget for the all-in total to run meaningfully above the menu subtotal once fees, tax and a tip are added. If you are converting crypto specifically to cover a set number of orders, convert with that in mind rather than against the menu price.
Beyond restaurants
This is the part that materially improves the conversion and that most people have not updated their mental model for. DoorDash now delivers from a great deal more than restaurants.
- Grocery. Partnerships with grocery chains put a real shop within reach of the same balance.
- Convenience and pharmacy. Household essentials, over-the-counter medicines, cleaning products.
- Alcohol, where local Illinois licensing permits — which varies by municipality.
- Pet supplies, flowers and general retail from participating partners.
That shifts a DoorDash balance from a treat into something closer to a household budget line, which is a better use of a crypto conversion. It also matters in parts of Illinois where the nearest full grocery store is a drive rather than a walk.
DashPass, the subscription that reduces delivery fees on eligible orders, generally cannot be paid from gift card credit — the same limitation Uber applies to Uber One.

DoorDash or Uber Eats?
The practical comparison for Illinois
| DoorDash | Uber Eats | |
|---|---|---|
| Downstate coverage | Generally stronger | Good in cities, thinner in small markets |
| Chicago coverage | Comprehensive | Comprehensive |
| Non-restaurant delivery | Extensive — grocery, pharmacy, retail | Growing |
| Balance also covers rides | No | Yes — same Uber account |
| Best for | Anywhere outside the collar counties | People who also use rideshare |
The genuinely useful test is not brand preference — it is opening both apps and seeing which one actually has the restaurants near your address. In Chicago the answer is usually "both". In DeKalb or Carbondale it frequently is not.
Our Uber gift card page covers the rides-and-eats combination.
Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem
Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.
Refunds, missing items and disputes
Worth understanding before you convert, because the resolution path is different when a gift card is involved.
Missing or incorrect items. DoorDash's in-app resolution flow issues credit or a refund the same way regardless of how you paid. Where the original payment came from gift card credit, the refund normally returns to the account balance rather than to an external payment method — which is fine, since the balance was never going anywhere else anyway.
What you cannot do. You cannot convert a gift card balance back to cash, and you cannot transfer it to another account. A refund restores the credit; it does not liquidate it.
Failed deliveries. Standard platform process applies. Report through the app rather than contacting the restaurant, because the platform holds the payment relationship.
Disputes with the marketplace you bought the card from. This is the one to be careful about. Once a gift card code has been delivered, crypto gift card marketplaces generally cannot refund it — there is no chargeback route on a crypto payment. If a code does not work, contact the marketplace immediately and keep the order reference. Buying from an established provider matters for exactly this reason.
Questions Illinois readers actually ask
Does DoorDash cover downstate Illinois?
More thoroughly than most competitors. DoorDash has pushed further into mid-sized and smaller Illinois markets — Peoria, Decatur, DeKalb, the Quad Cities, Carbondale, Quincy and Galesburg among them — where other platforms thin out or are absent. In the Chicago metropolitan area coverage overlaps heavily with competitors, so the advantage is mainly outside the collar counties.
Can I use a DoorDash gift card for groceries?
Yes, at participating partners. DoorDash now delivers from grocery, convenience and pharmacy retailers as well as restaurants, and gift card credit applies to those orders the same way. Alcohol delivery is available where local Illinois licensing permits, which varies by municipality. DashPass subscription fees generally cannot be paid from gift card credit.
Will a $50 DoorDash gift card buy $50 of food?
No. Delivery totals include in-app menu markups, a delivery fee, a service fee, Illinois sales tax — plus Chicago’s own restaurant and food-and-beverage taxes inside the city — and usually a tip. Gift card credit covers all of those, but the all-in total runs meaningfully above the menu subtotal. Convert with the total in mind rather than the menu price.
DoorDash or Uber Eats for a crypto gift card?
Open both apps at your address and see which actually lists the restaurants you want. In Chicago the answer is usually both. Outside the collar counties DoorDash generally has better coverage. Uber has one structural advantage: the same balance covers rides as well as food, because the credit attaches to the Uber account rather than a specific app.
