Buying a Google Play gift card with crypto

Google Play credit covers apps, subscriptions, books and films across Android. It is also the card most frequently demanded by phone scammers in the United States, which makes the warning on this page more important than the how-to.

Our featured on-ramp is CEX.IO CORP — a FinCEN-registered money services business holding an Illinois money transmitter licence (MT.0000359), NMLS ID 1804170. See how we rank exchanges.

The warning that comes first

Google Play gift cards are, along with Apple's, the most commonly demanded payment method in telephone fraud in the United States. That is not incidental to this page — it is the most useful thing on it.

The script. A caller claims to be from the IRS, the Social Security Administration, a sheriff's office, a court, a utility, Medicare, a tech support company, or a relative in trouble. There is an urgent payment required. You are directed to buy Google Play cards, scratch off the panel, and read the codes over the phone.

The rule that ends it: Google Play credit can only ever be spent inside Google's own ecosystem — apps, subscriptions, books, films, in-app purchases. It cannot pay a tax bill, a fine, a utility, a bail bond, a hospital account, an invoice or a debt of any kind. It is structurally impossible. Anyone asking you to pay with one is committing a fraud, without exception.

If you have already read out a code

Contact Google immediately — occasionally a code can be frozen if it has not been redeemed. Report to your local police department and to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov. And be alert for the second wave: "recovery services" that contact victims offering to retrieve the money for a fee are a follow-up fraud, and the Illinois Attorney General has warned about them specifically. Our Illinois scam guide covers the pattern.

What the credit actually covers

Legitimately, Google Play credit is a useful conversion for anyone in the Android ecosystem.

  • Apps and games from the Play Store, including paid downloads.
  • In-app purchases across supported titles.
  • Subscriptions billed through Google Play — many apps route their subscription billing this way, which means the credit can quietly cover a recurring cost.
  • Books and audiobooks from Google Play Books.
  • Films and TV rentals and purchases.
  • Google One storage plans, where billed through Play.

The subscription case is the most practically interesting. If you pay for services through Play billing, a crypto-funded balance covers a genuine recurring household cost rather than a discretionary purchase — which is a better use of a conversion than buying something you would not otherwise have bought.

What it will not pay for

The exclusions are broader than people expect, and knowing them is part of what makes the fraud obvious.

Google Store hardwarePhones, watches, speakers and other devices sold through the Google Store are generally not payable with Play credit.
Google Ads and WorkspaceBusiness services are billed separately and do not accept Play balances.
Anything outside GoogleBills, taxes, fines, invoices, debts, rent, utilities. Structurally impossible, which is the point.
CashNot redeemable for cash and not transferable between accounts.
Other regionsCodes are region-specific. A US code requires a US Google account with a US billing address.

The region point matters as much as it does for Steam. Marketplaces list regional variants side by side, and a cheaper foreign version is cheaper precisely because it will not redeem on your account.

Buying and redeeming

  1. Confirm the region. Buy the United States version for a US Google account.
  2. Choose a denomination. Commonly $10 to $100.
  3. Select your cryptocurrency. Bitcoin over Lightning is the sensible choice at these amounts, because on-chain network fees can be a meaningful fraction of a $10 purchase.
  4. Pay the invoice from your wallet.
  5. Receive the code, usually within seconds.
  6. Redeem it in the Play Store app under Payments & subscriptions → Redeem code, or at play.google.com/redeem.

Balances stack and apply automatically to eligible purchases before any other payment method on the account.

Redeem it immediately

An unredeemed code is a bearer instrument sitting in your email. Once it is in your Google account it is tied to you and cannot be used by anyone else. There is no reason to leave it in an inbox.

Tax treatment

Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.

There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

Our filing guide covers the record-keeping.

Google Play denominations are small, which makes the point about transaction count acute. A $10 card bought monthly produces twelve separate taxable disposals a year for a trivial amount of tax. One $100 card produces one. From 1 January 2027 the same logic applies to the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act's 0.2%, which is levied per broker transaction regardless of size.

Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem

Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Someone asked me to pay them with Google Play gift cards. Is that a scam?

Yes, without exception. Google Play credit can only be spent inside Google’s own ecosystem — apps, subscriptions, books, films and in-app purchases. It cannot pay a tax bill, a fine, a utility, a bail bond, a hospital account or any debt. It is structurally impossible. Google Play cards are among the most commonly demanded payment methods in US telephone fraud precisely because victims do not know this.

Can I buy a Google Pixel phone with Google Play credit?

Generally no. Hardware sold through the Google Store — phones, watches, speakers — is not payable with Google Play balance. Play credit covers apps, in-app purchases, subscriptions billed through Play, books, audiobooks, films and TV. For hardware, a general retailer gift card or simply selling crypto for dollars is the practical route.

Are Google Play gift cards region locked?

Yes. Codes are region-specific and a US code requires a US Google account with a US billing address. Marketplaces list regional variants side by side, and a cheaper foreign version is cheaper because it will not redeem on your account. Check the region on the product page before paying — delivered codes are not refundable.

Can Google Play credit pay for subscriptions?

Yes, where the subscription is billed through Google Play — which many apps use. That is arguably the most useful legitimate case for this card, because a crypto-funded balance then covers a genuine recurring cost rather than a discretionary purchase. Google Ads, Workspace and other business services are billed separately and do not accept Play balances.
