Coinstar crypto vouchers in Illinois

You have walked past these machines for twenty years. A large number of them now take cash and print a voucher redeemable for bitcoin, ether and five other assets — and in most of Illinois it is the cheapest cash on-ramp available.

Our featured on-ramp is CEX.IO CORP — a FinCEN-registered money services business holding an Illinois money transmitter licence (MT.0000359), NMLS ID 1804170. See how we rank exchanges.

What a Coinstar crypto voucher is

Coinstar's core business is the green kiosks in grocery-store entrances that count loose change and issue a voucher. The crypto product uses exactly the same mechanic in reverse: you insert notes, the machine prints a voucher, and you redeem that voucher for cryptocurrency in the Coinme app.

It is worth being precise about the structure, because it differs from a crypto kiosk in a way that matters. A crypto kiosk sends coins directly to a wallet address you provide at the machine. A Coinstar transaction produces a paper voucher which becomes crypto only when you redeem it in an account that has already been identity-verified.

That extra step is why the process takes roughly fifteen minutes rather than two, and it is also why it is cheaper — the machine is doing less, and the compliance burden sits in the app rather than at the terminal.

The voucher process

  1. Set up a Coinme account first and complete identity verification in the app. Doing this at the machine is possible but slow.
  2. Find a participating Coinstar machine. Not every Coinstar kiosk supports crypto — the location finder distinguishes them.
  3. Select the crypto option on the machine and enter your mobile number.
  4. Insert cash. Notes only.
  5. Take the printed voucher. Keep it safe — it is a bearer instrument until redeemed.
  6. Redeem it in the Coinme app. The crypto appears in your account.
  7. Withdraw to a wallet you control. Optional, and strongly recommended.

The voucher is money until you redeem it

Treat a printed voucher exactly as you would treat the cash you just put in. Photograph it as a backup, redeem it the same day, and do not leave it in a coat pocket. Vouchers do have redemption windows — check the printed terms rather than assuming it will wait indefinitely.

Which assets are supported

The Coinme network across Coinstar supports a broader set than most cash on-ramps.

Assets available through the Coinme network

BitcoinBTCLong-term holding; the default choice
EthereumETHHolding, and access to the wider ecosystem
LitecoinLTCFast, low-fee transfers
PolygonPOLLow-cost on-chain activity

Stellar LumensXLMCross-border transfers

Note that Illinois's Digital Asset Tax Act, effective 1 January 2027, treats all of these identically — including stablecoins and meme tokens, which are explicitly inside the statutory definition. Choosing dogecoin over bitcoin does not change your position under state law. See our tax guide.

Fees, and why they vary between stores

Published Coinme pricing has been described as a transaction fee of around 4% plus a spread charged by the processing partner. Some locations, however, quote a materially higher cash exchange fee — figures around 16.5% have been reported at certain sites.

That range looks inconsistent until you understand the structure: the retail partner's share is built into the rate at each individual machine. A store that negotiates a larger cut produces a worse rate for the customer, and the same operator's machine two miles away may be materially better.

From our review desk

This is the single most actionable thing we have found across Illinois cash routes. Comparing quoted totals at nearby participating machines on identical amounts, we have repeatedly seen gaps of several percentage points — same operator, same city, a few miles apart. In a dense grocery market like Chicago, Skokie or the Fox Valley, there are usually two or three within a short distance. If cash is your route and you are not in a hurry, checking a second machine before you commit is free money.

For comparison: a licensed exchange funded by ACH costs well under 1%, and an Illinois crypto kiosk may legally charge up to the greater of $5 or 18%. Coinstar sits between them and usually much nearer the cheaper end.

Where to find them in Illinois

Coinme's Illinois footprint is concentrated where grocery retail is densest.

  • Chicago — around 97 Coinme locations, the largest concentration in the state.
  • Naperville — around 14 locations, mostly grocery.
  • Springfield — around 13 locations, serving a wide central Illinois catchment.
  • Collar counties — broad coverage across DuPage, Lake, Will and Kane.
  • Downstate cities — coverage in Rockford, Peoria, Champaign, Bloomington and the larger markets, thinning in rural counties.

Use Coinme's own location finder rather than a general kiosk directory — third-party crypto ATM directories frequently conflate the two products and go out of date quickly.

What to watch for

  • Not every Coinstar machine supports crypto. Check the finder before travelling, and check the on-screen options before queuing.
  • The machine takes notes, not coins. The crypto function is separate from the coin-counting function it is famous for.
  • Redeem the voucher the same day. It is a bearer instrument and it has terms printed on it.
  • Store staff cannot help. The retailer hosts the machine; they do not operate the crypto service, know your rate or have access to your account.
  • Withdraw the crypto once it lands. Do not leave balances in a cash-on-ramp provider's app — Bitcoin Depot deactivated 9,000 machines nationally after a May 2026 Chapter 11 filing, and platforms that fail rarely give notice.

The fraud warning

No bank, utility, court, police department or government agency ever asks anyone to buy crypto at a grocery store machine. If someone you did not call is on the phone while you are standing at one, you are being defrauded. Illinois residents lost $20,077,277 through crypto kiosk fraud in 2025 across 510 complaints. Our scam guide covers the patterns.

Who this is actually for

Worth being specific, because "cash to crypto" covers several quite different situations.

Genuinely unbanked households. The core use case, and the one the route serves well. No bank account required, coverage in ordinary grocery retail across most of Illinois, and materially cheaper than the crypto kiosk that is often the more visible alternative.

People who are paid in cash. Tipped workers, day labour, informal work. The Coinstar route converts notes without a deposit at a bank branch, which for someone working shifts is a practical advantage rather than an ideological one.

People helping someone else. A relative without a bank account, a household member, a neighbour. This is the situation where knowing the ranking matters most — Coinstar over a kiosk saves real money on a small transaction.

Not for: anyone with a bank account and no urgency. A licensed exchange funded by ACH costs under 1% against a Coinstar route that carries a transaction fee plus a spread. If you have the option, take it — and if you have a debit card but no bank account, test whether an exchange accepts it before assuming cash is your only route. Our prepaid card page covers that.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Can you buy bitcoin at Coinstar machines in Illinois?

At participating machines, yes. You insert cash, the machine prints a voucher, and you redeem that voucher in the Coinme app for bitcoin or one of six other supported assets. Not every Coinstar kiosk supports crypto — use Coinme’s location finder rather than a general crypto ATM directory, which frequently conflates the two products.

How much does a Coinstar crypto purchase cost?

Published pricing has been described as a transaction fee around 4% plus a spread from the processing partner, though some locations quote a materially higher cash exchange fee — figures around 16.5% have been reported at certain sites. The variation is structural: the retail partner’s share is built into the rate at each machine. Checking a second nearby machine is genuinely worth a few minutes.

What cryptocurrencies can I buy at Coinstar?

The Coinme network supports bitcoin, ether, litecoin, polygon, chainlink, dogecoin and stellar lumens. Illinois’s Digital Asset Tax Act treats all of them identically from 1 January 2027 — including stablecoins and meme tokens, which are explicitly inside the statutory definition — so the choice is an investment decision rather than a legal one.

What are the limits on Coinstar crypto purchases?

Commonly up to around $5,000 a day and $30,000 a month, subject to the operator’s own verification tiering. Identity verification is completed in the Coinme app rather than at the machine. Splitting transactions across machines or days to stay under a threshold is structuring, which is a federal offence regardless of whether the underlying money is lawful.
