Coinme Cash: buying crypto at the till

The simplest cash-to-crypto route in Illinois, and the one that involves no machine at all. You give notes to a person at a checkout, and the crypto appears in your account in about a quarter of an hour.

Our featured on-ramp is CEX.IO CORP — a FinCEN-registered money services business holding an Illinois money transmitter licence (MT.0000359), NMLS ID 1804170. See how we rank exchanges.

What Coinme Cash is

Coinme is a US digital asset company that has built its business around cash on-ramps rather than online trading. It is best known in Illinois for the crypto service running through the green Coinstar coin-counting machines in grocery stores — but Coinme Cash is the simpler variant, and it removes the machine entirely.

You walk into a participating retailer, tell the cashier you want to make a Coinme Cash transaction, hand over physical notes, and the crypto is credited to your Coinme account in roughly fifteen minutes.

For anyone without a bank account, or anyone who simply deals in cash, this is the least frictional route available in Illinois. It is not the cheapest — that remains a bank-funded exchange account, which requires a bank account — but among cash routes it is consistently better priced than a crypto kiosk.

How it works, step by step

  1. Create a Coinme account and complete identity verification in the app. This happens before you go to the store, not at the till.
  2. Find a participating location. Coinme publishes a location finder covering both Coinstar machines and Coinme Cash retail partners.
  3. Tell the cashier you want to make a Coinme Cash transaction and give them the details the app provides.
  4. Hand over the cash. The retailer processes it as a load rather than a purchase.
  5. Wait roughly fifteen minutes. The crypto appears in your Coinme account.
  6. Withdraw it to your own wallet. This last step is optional and strongly recommended — see below.

Withdraw promptly

Do not leave a balance sitting in any cash-on-ramp provider's app. Bitcoin Depot deactivated a national fleet of roughly 9,000 machines after filing for Chapter 11 in May 2026, and platforms that fail rarely give notice. Move the crypto to a wallet you control once it lands. Our wallet guide covers the mechanics.

Coverage in Illinois

Coinme's Illinois footprint is one of the better ones in the country, spread across both the Coinstar machine network and Coinme Cash retail partners.

ChicagoAround 97 Coinme locations — the densest concentration in the state, covering grocery, financial services retail and convenience formats.
NapervilleAround 14 locations, concentrated in grocery retail.
SpringfieldAround 13 locations, serving a wide central Illinois catchment.
Partner formatsGrocery chains, PLS financial services locations, Fairplay Foods and similar community retail.
ElsewhereBroad coverage across the collar counties and the larger downstate cities; thinner in rural markets.

The presence in financial-services retail matters. In markets like Cicero, Berwyn and Waukegan, where cheque-cashing and money-order services do a great deal of the work a bank does elsewhere, Coinme Cash sits in exactly the places people already go.

What it costs

Coinme's pricing across the Coinstar and Coinme Cash network is a transaction fee plus a spread. Published figures have included a transaction fee around 4% plus a spread charged by the processing partner, with some locations quoting a materially higher cash exchange fee — reported as high as 16.5% at certain sites.

That range is wide, and the reason is structural: the retail partner's share is built into the rate at each individual location. Two stores a few miles apart can quote materially different totals on the same purchase.

The free saving nobody takes

If cash is your route and you are not in a hurry, check the quoted total at two nearby participating locations before committing. In dense markets like Chicago, Skokie or the Fox Valley there are usually several within a short distance, and we have seen the gap run to several percentage points on identical amounts. It costs nothing but a few minutes.

For context, a licensed exchange funded by ACH bank transfer costs well under 1% on the same purchase, and an Illinois crypto kiosk may legally charge up to the greater of $5 or 18%. Coinme Cash sits between the two, usually much closer to the exchange end than the kiosk end.

The honest summary: Coinme Cash wins on price, the kiosk wins on hours. If you can reach a participating store during opening hours, the cashier route is almost always the better deal. If it is two in the morning and you have cash in hand, the kiosk is what exists.

One legal note worth flagging: the Illinois Digital Asset Kiosk Act's statutory refund right for defrauded new customers is written around kiosks. Whether and how it applies to a cashier-based transaction depends on how the service is structured, so do not assume it automatically covers you — ask the operator. Our Kiosk Act guide sets out what the statute does say.

Identification and limits

Coinme is a money services business registered with FinCEN and subject to the Bank Secrecy Act. Identity verification happens in the app before your first transaction, which is why the store visit is quick.

  • Verification is required. Government-issued identification, and typically a selfie match. There is no meaningful no-identification tier.
  • Daily limits commonly run to around $5,000, with monthly limits around $30,000, subject to the operator's own tiering.
  • Structuring is a federal offence. Splitting transactions across locations or days to stay under a threshold is illegal regardless of whether the underlying money is lawful, and it is exactly what suspicious activity reporting exists to surface.
  • The retailer is not the operator. Store staff process the cash load; they cannot answer questions about your Coinme account, your rate or your balance.

The fraud warning that applies to every cash route

No bank, utility, court, police department or government agency ever asks anyone to buy crypto with cash at a store or a machine. If someone you did not call is on the phone while you are at the till, you are being defrauded. Illinois residents lost $20,077,277 through crypto kiosk fraud alone in 2025 across 510 complaints. Our refund guide covers what to do.

Coinme Cash wins on two things specifically: it removes the machine, which matters more than it sounds like it should when a terminal is jammed or out of service, and it sits inside retail that people in cash-heavy Illinois markets already visit for cheque cashing and money orders.

It loses on hours. If your realistic window for a transaction is after the stores close, a kiosk is what exists — and the Illinois fee ceiling means that at least the worst case is bounded.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

How does Coinme Cash work?

You create a Coinme account and verify your identity in the app before you go anywhere. At a participating Illinois retailer you tell the cashier you want to make a Coinme Cash transaction, hand over physical notes, and the crypto is credited to your Coinme account in roughly fifteen minutes. From there you can withdraw it to a wallet you control, which you should do promptly.

Is Coinme Cash cheaper than a bitcoin ATM?

Usually, and often by a wide margin. Coinme pricing is a transaction fee plus a spread that varies by location, while Illinois crypto kiosks may legally charge up to the greater of $5 or 18% and many sit in the mid-to-high teens. The kiosk’s advantage is hours — around 30% of Chicago-area machines run 24/7, whereas Coinme Cash requires store hours.

Where can I use Coinme Cash in Illinois?

Coverage is broad. Chicago has around 97 Coinme locations, Naperville around 14 and Springfield around 13, with further coverage across the collar counties and larger downstate cities. Partner formats include grocery chains, PLS financial services locations and community retailers such as Fairplay Foods. Use Coinme’s own location finder, which covers both Coinstar machines and cashier-based sites.

Do I need ID for Coinme Cash?

Yes. Coinme is a FinCEN-registered money services business subject to the Bank Secrecy Act, and identity verification is completed in the app before your first transaction — government-issued identification and typically a selfie match. There is no meaningful no-identification tier. Daily limits commonly run to around $5,000 with monthly limits around $30,000.
