Buying a Walmart gift card with crypto

Of all the ways to convert crypto into something genuinely useful, a Walmart card gets closest to a household budget — food, fuel, prescriptions and everything else under one roof, in nearly every part of Illinois.

Why a Walmart card is the most practical conversion

Most crypto gift card content treats these as gadgets — a way to buy a game, a coffee, a pair of trainers. Walmart is different, and it is the reason this page exists. A Walmart card converts digital assets into the category of spending that actually dominates a household budget: groceries, cleaning products, nappies, prescriptions, fuel.

That matters particularly in Illinois, where the state's grocery tax landscape has shifted and where the difference between a supercentre and a small-format grocer can be substantial for a weekly shop. It also matters because Walmart's Illinois footprint reaches places that Amazon same-day delivery does not — the southern counties, the rural centre, the towns along I-57 and I-70.

If your question is "how do I make crypto pay for things I was going to buy anyway", this is usually the right answer.

Where a Walmart card works in Illinois

Walmart operates well over a hundred stores across Illinois in several formats, and the card works across all of them plus the website and app.

SupercentresFull grocery plus general merchandise. The dominant format across the Illinois collar counties, the Fox Valley, and downstate.
Neighborhood MarketsGrocery-focused smaller format, common in denser suburban areas.
Walmart.com and the appIncluding pickup and delivery orders, which reach most of the state.
Sam's ClubWalmart gift cards are generally accepted at Sam's Club, though membership rules still apply.
Walmart fuel stationsWhere present at supercentre sites.

Coverage is genuinely statewide. Chicago proper has fewer full supercentres than the suburbs — a function of urban real estate rather than policy — but the collar counties, the Metro East region around Belleville, the Quad Cities near Moline, and every mid-sized city from Rockford to Decatur are well served.

Making the purchase

The flow takes under a minute on any of the major crypto gift card marketplaces.

  1. Choose a denomination. Walmart US cards are commonly offered from around $10 up to $500, with the exact range varying by provider.
  2. Select your cryptocurrency. Bitcoin over Lightning is the fastest and cheapest to settle. On-chain bitcoin, ether, USDC, USDT, litecoin, dogecoin and solana are widely supported.
  3. Pay the invoice from your wallet by scanning the QR code.
  4. Receive the code, normally within seconds.
  5. Add it to your Walmart account, or present the code at the till.

Balances stack, so several smaller cards work as well as one large one — and from a tax perspective the opposite is true, which is covered below.

A note on buying in advance

If you intend to convert a fixed monthly amount of crypto into grocery spending, buying one larger card monthly rather than several small ones reduces both the number of taxable disposals you generate and, from 2027, the number of Illinois digital asset tax events. It is a small administrative saving that compounds across a year.

What a Walmart gift card will not do

Worth knowing before you convert, because the exclusions are not obvious.

  • It is not a cash card. Walmart gift cards cannot generally be redeemed for cash, and cash back at the till is not available against a gift card balance.
  • Money transfer services are usually excluded. Walmart's in-store money centres — money orders, wire transfers, bill payment — typically do not accept gift card balances.
  • It is not usable for another gift card. Buying gift cards with a gift card is blocked, as it is nearly everywhere.
  • Some third-party concessions inside stores — vision centres, salons, restaurant franchises — may operate on separate systems.

If you need general-purpose spending rather than one retailer, a prepaid Visa or Mastercard product is the more flexible conversion, at a higher cost and with weaker Illinois consumer protection because multi-merchant cards fall outside the state's single-merchant gift certificate rules. Our vouchers guide covers that category.

Rebates, and how much they are actually worth

Several crypto gift card providers pay a percentage back in bitcoin. Rates are promotional and change constantly, but the pattern across the industry is consistent: everyday-spending brands — grocery, fuel, restaurants — often pay better than marketplaces, because merchant margins on those categories are wider.

Fold advertises between 1% and 20% back in sats depending on merchant. The Bitcoin Company has advertised up to 25% cashback on select brands. Bitrefill shows a rate on each product page, with select brands returning up to 10%. Whether Walmart specifically sits near the top or the bottom of those ranges on any given day is something only the live product page will tell you.

Keeping rebates in proportion

A 3% rebate on a $200 grocery card is $6. That is real, and it is smaller than the cost difference between buying your crypto on an exchange and buying it at an Illinois kiosk, where the statutory ceiling is 18%. Optimise the acquisition before you optimise the rebate.

Two rules that prevent almost every gift card problem

Never buy a gift card because someone asked you to. No government agency, utility, court, tax authority, bank or employer accepts payment in retail gift cards — that request is the fraud, without exception. And never read a gift card code to anyone over the phone or send a photograph of one; the code is the money, and once it is spent it cannot be recovered.

Tax treatment

Spending crypto is a disposal. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so buying a $100 gift card with bitcoin is a $100 sale of bitcoin, producing a capital gain or loss measured against what you originally paid for it. Illinois then taxes that gain through your ordinary state return, because Illinois taxable income starts from federal adjusted gross income.

There is no de minimis exemption for small personal crypto spending under current federal law. That is the practical argument for fewer, larger conversions rather than many small ones — one $200 gift card produces one taxable event; forty $5 purchases produce forty. From 1 January 2027 the Illinois Digital Asset Tax Act adds a separate 0.2% charge on broker exchanges, transfers and custody, collected as a line item regardless of profit.

Questions Illinois readers actually ask

Can I buy groceries with bitcoin in Illinois?

Indirectly, and easily. Convert crypto into a Walmart gift card on a marketplace such as Bitrefill, Coinsbee or CoinGate — delivery is usually within seconds — then use it in store, at the pump, or for a pickup or delivery order. Walmart operates well over a hundred Illinois stores across supercentre and Neighborhood Market formats, so coverage is genuinely statewide.

Can I get cash back from a Walmart gift card?

Generally no. Walmart gift cards cannot be redeemed for cash, and the till will not give cash back against a gift card balance. Walmart’s in-store money centre services — money orders, wire transfers, bill payment — typically do not accept gift card balances either. If you need dollars rather than groceries, selling on an exchange and withdrawing by ACH is far cheaper than any gift card route.

Do Walmart gift cards expire in Illinois?

Illinois law at 815 ILCS 505/2SS prohibits any gift certificate sold in the state from carrying an expiration date earlier than five years from issuance, or any post-purchase fee, with civil penalties of up to $50,000 per infraction. Walmart gift cards do not expire and carry no fees, so they sit comfortably inside that requirement. The protection applies to single-merchant store cards; multi-merchant prepaid cards fall under the federal CARD Act instead.

Is it cheaper to buy a gift card with crypto or to sell the crypto first?

Selling on an exchange and withdrawing dollars is almost always cheaper in pure cost terms — under 1% against a gift card conversion that typically carries a spread. The gift card wins on speed and simplicity, and can win on total cost where a meaningful rebate applies. If the amount is large or you want dollars rather than store credit, sell. If you were going to shop at Walmart anyway, the card is fine.
